Back pains at times are really very annoying. Professionals who need to sit in front of the computers for hours often suffer from such pains. On top of that, it is quite difficult to treat them. Some try medications, while others opt for chiropractors and physical therapists. These days, some are going for surgeries to cure their back pains, yet before going for any such thing you must know that back pains are generally of two types. They are short term or acute pain and the chronic back pain.

In general, the low back pain is classified as short term and is caused by lower back trauma such as vehicular injury, sports and other injuries. They are also caused by arthritis and similar disorders. Acute back pain can be simple muscle ache as well as stabbing pain and can affect your flexibility. Some people, especially those who suffer from chronic pain, even find it difficult to stand straight. Back pains that persist for more than three months are usually classified as chronic. Such pains are progressive and it is quite difficult to identify their cause. They can be caused due to a number of low back injuries like muscle spasm, slipped disk or joint, muscle strain and ligament sprain. Those who use their back muscles for lifting heavy furniture or for other work on a regular basis may also develop such pains.

Applying hot and cold compresses for such pains is an age old treatment. It can give an instant relieve by reducing the inflammation. You can also use some over-the-counter pain killers to get an instant relief. To reduce the inflammation, it is advised to use anti-inflammatory medications. However, these medicines can ease your pain for a few hours only. Moreover, they have certain side effects and must not be used for a prolonged period without consulting a doctor. You need to consult a physician if you want to solve the problem permanently.

Apart from medicines, you will also need to do some physical exercises to strengthen your back muscles. They are usually recommended by doctors. In addition, you can find information about such exercises online. You must continue with those workouts even after your problem is solved as they will stop the reoccurrence of your back pains. In addition, you must learn to maintain proper postures so as to avoid back injuries. You need to give less strain to your back, in case you have some old injuries.

These days, doctors are suggesting surgeries in extreme cases; however, they are last resorts and must be opted for only if all other measures have failed to stop your back pain. Surgeries can even prevent serious muscle injuries and are ideal in case the pain is due to anatomical reasons. It has also been observed that some back pains are caused due to psychological problem. This is why the doctors usually suggest for x-rays and other tests to verify the cause of such pains.
