Spring Cleaning: Organizing your Shoes
It seems like every year when spring comes around, I get the urge to purge. I do not know what it is about spring that makes me need to clean every nook and cranny of my home and get rid of old stuff and organize my life, but I have to say, I do love spring cleaning.
The obvious place to start is to clear out the Tupperware cabinet and get rid of the seven bottles of half used shampoo that have somehow taken up residence under your bathroom sink. I did all of the obvious cleaning and I was not satisfied. I had not purged enough! So I attached my closet. The obvious place to start in the closed is with your clothes. I got rid of stained t-shirts and last year’s jeans that I no longer loved. Everything that could be re-used was donated to charity, and some of the more worn items had to go straight to the trash. As I got everything organized and color coordinated and the winter clothes stashed away at the back and the bright and cheery summer clothes front and center, I realized I needed to tackle a bigger project than just my clothes. I needed to take a long hard look at my ever-expanding shoe collection.
I’m like many women. I buy a new outfit for a special event like a wedding or another big event, and I buy shoes to match. The problem is that a lot of these shoes get worn one time, and then are put away, never to be worn again. What a shame and a waste of shoes! I needed to get all of my shoes organized and visible so I could take inventory of what I have, get rid of what I don’t need, and purge what I shouldn’t wear.
The first thing I did was pulled out all of my shoes and put them with their mate and lined everything up. There were a few obvious pairs of shoes that needed to go. I love wearing flip-flops, but let’s face it. They’re a one season (if that) shoe. You are not doing your feet any favors by saving your flip-flops from one season to the next. So I put my best foot forward and trashed last years worn down flops. I also realized I had been stockpiling running shoes. My old tennis shoes were not fit to be donated, so I packed them up and sent them to Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe shoe recycling program. I figured that was much better than throwing them in the trash.
Next up was my heels and dress shoes. These shoes get the least amount of wear, so I didn’t have to throw anything away from this group. But I did need to scale back. I was able to keep some of my favorites, and I donated the killer shoes. You know the shoes that make you want to cut off your own feet after wearing them through the reception of your cousin’s wedding? I figured someone else might have better luck with some of my less comfortable heels.
After a good purging of my shoes, I invested in some quality shoe racks, and put all of the keepers back into my closed displayed in a nice orderly fashion. Hopefully now that I’ve scaled back, I can wear some of my favorites more often and make wise shoe-buying decisions. Spring cleaning in my closet was a success!
